Cherry Blossoms

The cherry blossoms have been beautiful this late April and early May. There are 5 cherry trees in the Charlton Down Nature Area. I would like to think that most are Native wild cherry (Prunus avium) but there are least two types. Some have flowers with single petals and some with double. Unfortunately, the original planting scheme has been lost in time so I have no guidance; and I have discovered there are so many varieties of our trees that it is easy to make a misidentification. There are 15 different types of cherry tree in Britain. Trying to record every organism that lives in the Nature Area is quite a task and a steep learning curve. If you can point out any mistakes, please let me know. So for the moment please just enjoy the flowers.

Cherry trees are just one of the 28 different types of trees and shrubs growing in and around Charlton Down Nature Area.
