Brambles (Rubus fruticosus) grow in just one place in Charlton Down Nature Area itself, in a large thicket at the lower or southern end of the site alongside the boundary with the cultivated field lying beyond. The Nature Area also benefits from the existence of a large blackberry patch nearby, bordering the Swale and the roadside to the west. Every part of these bramble plants – the leaves, flowers, and fruits – sustains wildlife.
Blackberry is one of 28 trees and shrubs recorded as growing in the Nature Area.
