There is only one true Beech tree (Fagus sylvatica) in Charlton Down Nature Area. It is found close to the pond, behind the old carved wooden seat. It was planted maybe about 15 years ago. Now in mid-May the fresh lime green leaves are fully opened. When the leaves first come out of the buds, they are folded up like a fan that gradually opens, and the translucent blade is fringed with fine hairs.
This tree is one of the 28 types of trees and shrubs recorded so far in the Nature Area.
